Balance Me Cleanse And Smooth Face Balm

balance Me Cleanse and Smooth Face Balm

A few weeks ago I shared my Winter Skincare Routine and I mentioned that I had just run out of my cream cleanser, the MV Skincare Gentle Cream Cleanser (which is absolutely fabulous). As soon as the cleanser was finished, I moved to another cleanser by balance Me called the Cleanse And Smooth Face Balm, which I had ordered from, a lovely online shop that offers free worldwide shipping.

Although it is called balm, the texture of this cleanser is more like a thick exfoliating cleanser, with a slightly “tacky” feel to it. It contains some fine oatmeal parts that are meant to gently exfoliate. I have often experienced some separation in the balm, with the oily part of the balm separating from the thicker part and dripping out of the tube as I flipped the top to open it. I do not particularly enjoy the texture, but it is something that I am willing to get over for the sake of a good cleanse. However, I have had a hard time removing this cleanser from my skin, as it seems that the oatmeal parts never get off my skin completely, even after steaming, wiping, and rinsing. I feel like there is always a residue left on my skin. With that being said, my main problem with this product is that I experienced a sudden breakout while using it. Not sure if because it is too rich for my skin type, or because of the exfoliating oatmeal parts, or simply because it contains shea butter. To confirm my suspicion that it was the cleanser that broke me out, my skin started to clear out as soon as I quit using it.

However, I also want you to know that I have not read a single complaint about this product from other bloggers nor other reviewers on the web. Most people have raved about it and say that they cannot go without it. Therefore I have had to sadly accept that my skin is somehow sensitive to a great product with a great price tag. Sigh.

I hoped I could replace one of my more expensive cleansers with this one, which I paid only about $ 28, but since it did not work for me I have ordered the May Lindstrom Honey Mud, and I am very excited about it. In the meanwhile, if you want to try the balance Me Cleanse And Smooth Face Balm for yourself, it is available for purchase at

What is your favorite cleanser? Have you tried any really effective, inexpensive cleansers?

Great review and honest review Lily! I have not tried this cleanser before..but would not for the moment as I have found a couples of ones that I really like :-)

    • Thanks love! Which cleansers are you liking, if you don’t mind sharing? ;) xx

  • Jessie Hao

Oh no….I just received this cleanser today from! Now I am slightly concerned….I use Monu cleansing balm at the moment and I really love it.

    • Hi Jess, I would love to know how you like this cleanser! I hope it works well for you ;) xx

  • Ana Green

I have tried a few balance me products and I have found all of them thoroughly disappointing… I rarely say that about a brand but to me they just don’t live up to their hype, I am willing to try some other products to see if I can find something that works for me but I feel like I keep wasting my money, lovely to see an honest review of this product Lily! Xx

    • Thanks Ana! It’s such a shame, because the price is great! I just received the May Lindstrom Honey Mud, and I am very excited about it. In the meanwhile, my skin cleared out, so that’s all good! ;) xx

  • Riham

Hi Lily, I’ve experienced the same reaction with the balance-me balm cleanser. You will however like their mask. Unfortunately I also experienced the bad reaction with Emma Hardie moringa cleansing balm. I use the REN clay cleanser in summer & the Antonia Burrell cleansing oil as first cleanse then Merumaya luxury facial wash; this has helped a lot with clearing my skin. Thank you for your honest review.

  • That’s a shame it didn’t work for you Lilly. I’m one of those people who love and rave about it as it really works well for me! It’s actually the most expensive cleanser I’ve tried though! I would love to save up to try some more luxurious brands. The Honey Mud sounds amazing, look forward to hearing your thoughts on it once you’ve given it a try :) x

    • Hi love, I am so glad to hear that it works for you! I am loving the Honey Mud so far, even though I don’t use it as a cleanser, but more as a mask. I am going to use it a little longer before writing a post about it, but I definitely will review it because it is pretty amazing! Thanks for your comment :) xx

Hi I am still on the search for the perfect cleanser as well! Right now I am oil cleansing with Argan Oil which is working really well, but am still on the lookout for a cleanser to maybe incorporate a few times a week for a deeper cleanse. Also, perhaps your skin is sensitive to coconut oil? It is highly comedogenic and always causes me to break out.

    • Hi Kathleen, thank you for your comment. I think that my breakout was possibly caused by the shea butter or the oat particles. However, I have used a few cleansers in the past that have worked really well, so I am just going to buy one of those again. Have you tried the Aurelia Miracle Cleanser or the Pai Cleanser? They are both great!

  • Nic Gustafsson

Hi Lilly! Great review and the product is one I have been wanting to try but since receiving a pot of Aurelia’s Miracle Cleanser for Christmas I have a feeling that may never happen! I am THAT smitten with the Miracle Cleanser so that is one product I can definitely recommend. I’m even thinking about getting a pot for each of my girlfriends on their birthdays! Very curious about the Honey Mud (I have the Problem Solver) and look forward to your review on that =) xx Nic

Hi Lilly! I’m kinda new to commenting on blogs so let’s see if my comment goes through! Great review, shame that the product didn’t live up to all the hype but what works for one doesn’t always work for another I guess. Which can be difficult to suss out when there are only glowing reviews to be read! My all-time favorite cleanser which people will have a hard time prying me away from is Aurelia’s Miracle Cleanser. I received it as a gift for Christmas and loved it from the first cleanse. It takes makeup and grime away ever so gently yet effectively leaving your skin super soft, smooth and radiant so that is definitely one cleanser I can recommend! I am so smitten with it in fact that I’m thinking about giving one to each of my girlfriends on their birthdays! Every girl needs a good dependable cleanser =) I look forward to reading about the Honey Mud as well (I have the Problem Solver which I really like) so will keep my eyes peeled for that. xx Nic

I’m having tiny breakouts once using this balm in the evening….And I tried multiple times to test the possibility. You’re the only blogger has the same reaction with me on this cleanser…The very last product I’ve reaction is from Kiehl’s Midnight Recover (for face). Probably they are having some similar ingredients? Or do you have any idea which ingredients make us reacted on it?

    • Hi Wynnce, I have a few ideas in my mind of what could have caused the breakouts, but I can’t tell for sure. One is shea butter, which can sometimes clog pores. The other suspect is the oat particles, which for some reasons are difficult to completely take off my skin and also scrub the skin, which may be irritating. Such a shame, isn’t it? Are you looking for another cleanser or you already have a safe, non-irritating alternative cleanser to use?

      • Wynnce

I thought it is caused of the essential oils because the Kiehl’s contain several essential oils too. But now..maybe its those two ingredients caused breakouts. It’s such a shame….waste my money, hahaha!!! Even The Body Shop cleansing balm perform better than this and I have no reaction at all. I’m now using Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm (my HG at the moment, can’t recall how many tubs I’ve purchased). Will try Aromatherapy Associates Soothing Cleansing Balm really soon.

I’m a new follower of you because I found that our skin react to the same thing, sorry for such a bad following reason >_< I'm a Chinese from Malaysia.

  • Thank you Riham, and sorry for the delay. I have resolved to go back to my trusted cleansers ;)

  • London Girl

I use it all the time and it’s perfect on me, maybe an allergic reaction?
