Weekend Catch-Up #23

Weekend Post 23

Thank you all for the well wishes. I am doing much better and I even drove this week! I cannot say that I was completely calm, but I managed to get back home with no injuries. Here are the highlights from the past week…

Empty #1. This week I emptied my first jar of Meow Meow Tweet Grapefruit Deodorant. I didn’t have to think about it twice and I repurchased it right away. I am sure I mentioned this deo before, but if you missed it, this is an effective cream deodorant that is also baking soda-free. It smells great and does the job.

Empty #2. Finishing your cleanser is never fun, but finishing it on Friday evening is the worst! Especially when you do not have a back-up for it. Anyways, I said goodbye to another bottle of YULI Halcyon Cleanser and I promptly…

Repurchased. Yep. My skin and Halcyon have gotten into some type of agreement because it appears that every time I try another cleanser I get spotty, and then my skin clears out as soon as I use the Halcyon Cleanser again. I have also gotten used to rinseing my face with water instead of having to wipe off with towels. I only do balm cleansing once or twice a week when I have a little me-time. You can read more about the Halcyon cleanser here.

Hand Serum*. My sweet friend from England, Annabelle, sent me a gift for Christmas that I have been loving. It’s a hand serum from Bodhi & Birch, and it’s my first time trying a product from them. Although it’s an oil, it absorbs into the skin immediately and leaves no greasiness behind. It’s such a great overnight treatment and it smells lovely! The scent is citrus-y, and  uplifting. I can’t thank Annabelle enough for such a thoughtful gift (she knew my poor hands needed this!). Now I just have to figure out how to buy more from Bodhi & Birch, because they only deliver to the UK. A good find for sure. **Update**: the Bodhi & Birch Hand Serum is now available at LoveLula with free international shipping (click here).

Photography. Lately, I have been receiving a lot of questions about my photography equipment: camera, lighting, how do I do this/that, etc. I have been using a Canon t4i for the past two years (and a Polaroid before that), which gives excellent, quality photos, but I would not be able to properly review the camera as I don’t even know all of its features. I am not a pro, nor a tech savy person in general, so I mess with all the settings until the photos look bright and clear. Sometimes I just mess with all the settings and get nothing done. All product photos are usually taken with artificial light. I use a ring light that my husband chose for me (you can find it here on Amazon). All my recent photos for the makeup posts are taken in natural light, which is why they are much brighter and nicer than the ones I used to take at our old place.

Eye Primer Update. many of you have been asking me to test out some “natural” eye primers, and I have started to do it. I am happy to report that I have used the Red Apple Lipstick Eye Primer* for the past two days, and it has worked very well so far. It comes in a little pot, and as I would do with any eye primer, I only dab a tiny amount with my ring finger, just enough to cover my upper lid up to my brow bone. As you may have noticed I have hooded eyes so anything will crease on me–anything. The Red Apple Lipstick primer prevented eye shadow from creasing for the entire day on both days that I used it. I will continue to use it (I need to workout in it!) and will review it a little later, but I have been pleased with the performance so far. Yay! My only concern is that it comes in only one, light shade, and I do not think that it would suit all skin tones. Have any of you tried it? Thoughts?

Giveaway Coming Soon. Keep an eye on the blog this week! I’m not trying to tease you, I really just don’t know which day of the week I will be posting it yet.

Questions, Requests, etc. If you have any questions or requests, please leave me a comment below. There are several products that I have been using that I would like to review/feature, but if you have specific requests, please let me know. I am currently searching for eye primers, eyebrow makeup, concealers (that’s a hard one), and some of you have been asking me which spf products I use (maybe an ultimate sunscreen post with all the ones I tried?). As always, feel free to ask and I will do my best to get on it.

Have a great week!

  • I agree, the YÜLI Halcyon Cleanser, it is amazing! And, I’m also a fan of Annabelle’s blog. I’ll have to take a look at Bodhi & Birch!

    • Yes, that hand serum is lovely :) Annabelle is a sweetheart ♥

  • Great round-up and good to hear you’re doing better :) Want to try YULI products so badly, as well as the MeowMeowTweet deodorant! x

    • Hi Tania, YULI skincare and Meow Meow Tweet deodorants are among of my all-time favorites. Let me know your thoughts if you give them a try! ;)

  • Haha, you know you love a product when you just repurchase it right way as soon as you empty it. Actually, I keep a little back-up stock of my favorite skin care products.

    • I know! I usually do keep a back-up, but I had a couple of rough weeks and I completely forgot :( Thank goodness the cleanser was available when I ordered it, because it usually sells out hours after is back in stock at Spirit Beauty Lounge! Thanks for reading :)

  • I’ve been searching for an eye shadow primer to replace my Urban Decay primer potion for a while – so I have now put this onto my wish list for February, I’m interested to try! And me too I have hooded eye lids they’re such a pain with eyeshadow!!! Haha :)

    • Haha :) I think that RAL is a good option. I haven’t tested it out in the heat of Florida’s Summer yet, but so far I am very pleased. Please let me know your thoughts if you do give it a try ;)

Hi Lily, have you tried Kahina’s serum? http://kahina-givingbeauty.com/shop/kahina-serum/

    Am thinking of purchasing.

    • Hi Vanessa, yes, I have tried Kahina’s serum and I liked it, though I prefer their plain Argan Oil and their night cream. The serum is a tad more rich than I prefer a serum to be for my skin (combination).
In case you were interested in reading, I reviewed both Argan Oil and Night Cream here (please let me know if you have any questions!):

I have the same MMT deo as well as their lavender kind and both are lovely! Have you tried any of KYPRIS beauty? I’ve heard a lot of good about them recently, but some products are more expensive. I know they’re available on Beauty Habit as well as more boutique-y shops. Also I’m looking for a natural concealer too! Hope you find one you love soon so I can buy it haha!

    • Hi beautiful! I have Kypris Moonlight Catalist (it was highly recommended to me), but so far I have used it only a couple of times. I find it a little too active for my skin, (it’s an overnight exfoliator). I usually wake up with my skin looking and feeling a little extra sensitive. I do have samples of their Beauty Elixirs, I need to try them! :)
How are you liking your YULI cleanser? Would love to know!

      • Catherine Crain

Oh yes I remember you mentioning Catalist! I have definitely looked into it as well as their clearing serum. If you try their elixirs let me know! Can’t justify those prices without trusted opinion.. but they sound amazing. And I’m adoring the cleanser. It will definitely be a repurchase and I plan on purchasing the Cocoon elixir too!

Thank you for all your great reviews! I’ve been wanting to try Yuli for the past year ever since I’ve jumped on the green beauty bandwagon (and loving it so far!). I’ve tried numerous brands in short amount of time…don’t even want to think about $$ I’ve spent. Ouch. But I haven’t made the jump to Yuli. One of the products I’m really intrigued about is Halcyon cleanser, which people seem to either love or not. I’ve tried various green cleanser and haven’t found one that I really like yet. Osmia came closest because it lathers (cleansing = lather/foam for me), and left my skin clean without drying, which is amazing since I have fairly dry skin with extremely rough patch around my mouth and chin. Others I’ve tried left me feeling not very clean. I’ve used TJ’s coconut oil as make up remover for few years and use separate facial cleanser after. I’ve read your review on Halcyon and really want to try it. I want to ask if there’s any trick to using it? I think I’ve read somewhere the trick is to start with very lightly damp hands and face? That’d be hard for me in the shower. :( Anyway, I’d appreciate any input you can give me and thank you for all the great reads! I wish you a very speedy recovery!!

    • Hi Stacey! I’ll say that’s the right trick–it’s a light gel and you want a little dampness for the foaming action, but not so much that you’ll overwhelm the gel and feel like you’re just massaging water over your face. Story short: splash a little water on your face or hands, 3-4 (or more–I know Lilly likes way more) pumps of cleanser into your hand, massage, leave it for a couple seconds, and then rinse. On a Twitter post, YÜLI actually did recommend using the cleanser after you’ve been in the shower for a couple minutes–I guess you’ll just have to be strategic about it. :)

      • Stacey

Thank you for your suggestion. :) I can’t wait till I get my hands on some of the goodies I’ve ordered!

  • Amanda

I’d love to see a review on the Red Apple mascara! I’ve only seen their promo on it around the place, and I trust your opinions. I’ve been trying to find a healthy volumising mascara, but they seem pretty hard to find. The recommended ones always seem to be for definition and length.

  • Vanessa

    Hey Lilly!

As for concealer, have you tried Beautycounter’s Touchup Skin Concealer? I recently purchased the fair and light shade and have been mixing them. I find that their coverage and brightening effect is great, given that you let them rest on the skin a bit before blending them in. Thanks for a great weekly roundup

  • I’m so glad you love the hand serum! I’m thinking of purchasing one for myself soon too as I keep forgetting to wear gloves outside and my hands are suffering! I’m also considering a YULI Halcyon cleanser purchase because I miss using gel cleansers and as always you can sell me anything ;)
If you ever want anything else from Bodhi just let me know & we can arrange a swap or something! xx

  • Megan

Did you say at one point that you were going to do a 2014 favorites? I would love to see that!

  • Liv

Dear Lilly, do you know the german natural brand Benecos? They have a truly great Eye Primer for little money. all the best from Europe! Liv

  • Em

YULI cleanser sounds great! It’s hard to find products you don’t want to give up :) I was wondering though, do you find that YULI’s cleanser is enough to remove Gressa Foundation, or do you have another favorite you use in conjunction?
